Centering Prayer as 11th Step Practice

Centering Prayer is a receptive method of silent prayer which deepens our relationship with God, the indwelling Presence, closer than breathing, closer than thinking, closer than consciousness itself.  Two Guard of the Heart practices, the Active Prayer Sentence and the Welcoming Prayer, are to be used when we are going about our daily lives, the Active Prayer Sentence under normal circumstances and the Welcoming Prayer when we experience afflictive emotions. This retreat will combine elements of a Centering Prayer Retreat with both instruction and practice in these two Guard of the Heart practices.  The design of all of these comes from Thomas Keating through Contemplative Outreach.

The 11th Step in the 12 Steps of Recovery states: “Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out."

This retreat will explore the method of Centering Prayer as an 11th Step practice in the 12 Step way of life.
